I am truly grateful to Julian for the incredible opportunity to photograph large pure metal structures, which has proven to be an amazing photographic challenge and a profound learning experience. This was not only my first chance to capture fine-art work of this magnitude, but it also allowed me to explore new techniques and push the boundaries of my creativity. The reflective nature of metal posed unique challenges, transforming what initially seemed like a straightforward task into a full-day endeavor to get everything just right on the very first day. However, this rigorous process taught me more than any other subject I’ve encountered in my photographic journey thus far.

The interplay of light and shadow on the surfaces of these metal structures created a dynamic canvas that required careful consideration and planning. Each angle I explored revealed different textures and reflections, which added layers of complexity to the images I aimed to create. The challenge was not just in capturing the physical form of the metal but in conveying its essence and the emotions it evoked. To enhance this process, we experimented with using smoke to capture light, which significantly elevated our work. The smoke not only added an ethereal quality to the photographs but also helped to diffuse the harsh reflections, creating a richer, more dynamic scene that drew the viewer’s eye and engaged their imagination.

Through this experience, I gained insights into the nuances of lighting and composition that I had not previously encountered. The way light interacted with the smooth, polished surfaces of the metal required me to adapt my shooting techniques, including adjusting my camera settings and experimenting with different lenses. Each shot became a careful balance of capturing the brilliance of the metal while ensuring that the smoke complemented rather than overwhelmed the scene. This meticulous attention to detail has undoubtedly enhanced my skills as a photographer and deepened my appreciation for the art form.

Moreover, collaborating with Julian throughout this project was instrumental in my growth. His expertise and vision provided me with guidance that was invaluable, allowing me to refine my approach and develop a more critical eye for detail. The entire process was not just about taking photographs; it was a journey of artistic exploration that challenged me to think differently about my subject matter. I left the experience not only with a collection of awesome images but also with a renewed sense of inspiration and a deeper understanding of the transformative power of light in photography.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have my spacious photo studio (Cobalt Studios PDX) that not only meets my creative needs but also includes the convenience of garage access. This unique feature allows me to easily transport equipment, set up larger projects, and even utilize the garage space for various creative endeavors, such as staging and experimenting with different lighting setups. The studio itself is designed to inspire creativity, equipped with a variety of backdrops, props, and professional-grade lighting that can accommodate a wide range of photography styles.

As I continue to develop my craft, I find myself eager to expand my portfolio with more fine-art and commercial work. I am particularly interested in exploring the vibrant art scene in and around Portland, Oregon, which is known for its diverse culture and artistic expression. The city offers an array of opportunities for photographers like me to collaborate with local artists, businesses, and creative individuals who share a passion for visual storytelling. I am keen to take on projects that challenge my skills and push the boundaries of my artistic vision, whether that involves working on commercial advertising campaigns, capturing the essence of local events, or creating thought-provoking fine-art pieces that resonate with viewers on a deeper level.

I am excited about the potential to create meaningful connections and contribute to the artistic landscape of this vibrant city while continuously honing my craft and exploring new creative avenues.
