About the event

Short Intro

Hey there! Rose and Michael here: the new owners of Cobalt Studios.

In the process of shifting into this amazing space, we've been asking tons of photographers and other creatives, "What would you want the most out of Cobalt Studio?" Hands down, the number one response has been EDUCATION!

More often than not, even in the bookings we've had here, photographers don't understand how to use the space, or if they have a basic understanding, most photographers have no clue what half of the other equipment is for or how much potential is at their fingertips.

More than anything, beyond watching Cobalt succeed, we want to see Portland's photographic community succeed. Not only succeed, but excel! And that begins with ridding of that intimidation looming behind the concept of a closed studio set. It begins with nailing down the basics, and that's exactly what this workshop/short course is all about.

What to expect at the Monochrome Workshop

At the Monochrome Workshop, photographers will be working with models and other photographers with a rather basic lighting setup with a variety of backdrops.

Before shooting, we will discuss and go over how to set up and use the flash triggers, how to mount and control lighting stands, and the basics of light control and dispersal with softboxes, grids, and bare lighting. We will discuss and practice lighting settings, setting up backdrops, and depth and location of where to place a model for our standard studio sets.

. All details of how we will achieve our looks will be discussed during the workshop.

Beyond education, what is expected to be gained from this workshop

You will be capturing an assortment of awesome images with models collaborating on this workshop. You will be able to use these images in your portfolio to show off your new skills, and hopefully gain some new connections!

Here's an inspiration board of what we intend to capture!

What you'll need

You'll need your camera, lenses, and a flash trigger. We currently have 2 Canon, 2 Sony, and 2 Nikon/Fuji triggers. You'll be prompted to answer your camera model at checkout. If we don't have a trigger for you, they can be rented for a very low cost from Profoto and we will instruct you on how to do so. (Note: We are also going to be discussing a collaboration with Profoto, so hopefully this little segment gets erased and renting will be out of the question)
