About the event

Short Intro

Hey there! Rose and Michael here: the owners of Cobalt Studios.

Part 1:

Equipped workshops are designed to help photographers better understand the equipment inside a professional photo studio. It is a moderate studio photography introduction course.

Part 2:

Alongside fellow artists, we aim to educate fellow creatives, bolden community, and inspire with the unique and specialized styles of guest artists.

For this date, we are partnering with our friend and fellow photographer, Julian  Romeo, based here in Oregon.

What to Expect at the Equipped Workshop

  • Objective: We aim to educate photographers on the effective use of studio equipment and outdoor lighting methods in a safe and laid back enviornment. Outdoors, we can examine and practice similar styles of Julian Romeo.
  • Equipment: In the studio we will provide, study and practice lighting strobes, lighting constants, modifiers, gels, optical spot, reflectives, atmosphere, backdrops, prisms, gels, stands and more (if you've attended our back to basics, this is the diversified step-up workshop).  Outdoors, we will use natural light and your own speedlights, portable lights, or in-camera flash to practice additional techniques alongside our guest artist (view inspiration).
  • Instructor: Michael Ballard and Julian Romeo
  • Examples of Julian's work https://pin.it/3k8QYrX7W

Outline:

  1. Introduction (15 minutes)
  2. Studio Portion We will begin in the studio, learning about and practicing with a great diversity of professional photography equipment.
  3. Photo Walk in Portland, Oregon (1ish hour)We will depart the studio and reconvene in nearby neighborhoods with a plethora of interesting features to capture stills or use as portrait backdrops. We will guide you in additional methods such as shutter drag, intentional motion blur, dual exposures, and utilizing flash and natural light to breed artistic hybrids that stand out as a work of art.
  4. Wrap-Up & Q&A (15 minutes) Before we wrap up the official walk, we will do a Q+A and recap. After that, I'm sure a number of us will proceed to find treats and hang out.

Materials Provided:

  • Studio lighting equipment, optical spotlight, gels, V-Flats, flash triggers, and so much more
  • Booties for the cyclorama wall (if needed)

Post-Workshop:

  • Photographers to share images with models within 6 weeks
  • Social media tagging guidelines
  • Follow-up email with additional resources and workshop materials

What you'll need:

You'll need your camera, lenses, and a flash trigger. Your own lighting to take outdoors for later portion is optional. We currently have 2 Canon, 2 Sony, and 2 Nikon/Fuji triggers for in the studio. You'll be prompted to answer your camera model at checkout. If we don't have a trigger for you, they can be rented for a very low cost from Profoto and we will instruct you on how to do so. Bring a notebook for taking notes, and comfortable shoes for the photo walk. (Note: We are also going to be discussing a collaboration with Profoto, so hopefully this little segment gets erased and renting will be out of the question)

Closing

We are very excited to be hosting workshops and this is only the first step to so many to come. Once the intimidation factor of working in the studio is out of the way, there are endless set-ups and themes to learn. Keep an eye out for workshops about advanced lighting, gels/color, light modifiers, posing, post-production, the business of photography, and so much more!

Grab your ticket and we'll see you there!
